It was wonderful to be part of this course with Lizzie and to benefit from her knowledge and insights and her gentle but insistent nudging. I learned so much and was finally able to describe me and my business in a way that felt authentic, and that captured the value that I create for clients.

Who is Website in a Weekend for?

This two-day virtual workshop is designed for three groups of people.

  1. Freelancers and consultants building your own website. Just because you’re starting out, you don’t have to go it alone. I’ll show you how to construct a website that attracts client enquiries and walk you step-by-step through writing compelling copy for each key page. This is the course I wish I’d had when I started building my site.

  2.  Freelancers and consultants on a tight budget building your website with a web developer. No matter how good your developer is, the effectiveness of the website they build for you is directly related to the quality of your brief and the content you give them. This course will help you put together a clear brief for your developer and write your website content before they start to design. This results in a smoother, faster, cheaper build AND a site that attracts attention from the right people.

  3. Freelancers and consultants who want to improve your website. If your site’s not delivering a regular stream of leads from the right people, it’s not working. The good news is that underperforming websites are often quick and easy to fix, and don’t need a full website redesign. I’ll show you how to rework your site to attract client enquiries and take you step-by-step through writing more effective copy for each key page.

This course isn’t for you if:

  • You want your website planned and written for you. Check out my done-for-you website copy services if you’d like me to write your website copy for you.

  • You aren’t prepared to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in. We’re going to go hard for 48 hours, so get your comfy pants on and break out your writing cardigan.

How Website in a Weekend works

Website in a Weekend is a virtual workshop that combines live coaching over Zoom with writing sprints, where you get your head down and go hard to put your learnings into action.

Before you start

Before we get stuck in, I’m going to give you three things to do, so you’re ready to get the most out of the course. Yeah, I know it’s called website in a weekend, but all good adventures require research and Kendal Mint Cake.

  • You’ll gather everything you know about your customers. I’ll give you a worksheet that shows you how to gather this information, analyse it and identify themes.

  • You’ll carry out three detailed customer interviews. I’ve spent years doing these interviews, so I’ll show you exactly how to put your clients at ease and capture important insights at the same time.

  • You’ll gather testimonials. I’ll write you an email template so you can collect testimonials from your clients.

This prep will take you about six hours. Make sure you’ve got time in your calendar to do this research right now, before you reserve your place on the course.

Day 1

Get into your ideal customer’s head, learn the anatomy of a high performing website, nail your elevator pitch, and get jiggy with SEO.

9:00am – 12:30pm NZST

  • Introductions. We’re going to be spending two intense, productive days with each other, so we’ll get to know each other first.

  • We learn about the important of market niches.

  • Exercise to help you identify your best customer niche.

  • After some fresh air and a stretch we look at how customer avatars help you define yourself and your solution in a way that deeply connects to your prospect’s problem.

  • You create a customer persona. This dives into your customers’ pain points, and records how you solve them.

  • We look at your customers’ stages of awareness, and how you can guide them from being strangers to loyal clients. Then it’s time for some lunch.

1:30pm – 5:30pm NZST

  • We start the afternoon by brainstorming types of content you could create to attract and serve your clients at each stage of awareness.

  • We look at the anatomy of a high performing consultant’s website, and how the elements work together to attract leads.

  • You make a plan that shows what each page on your site will say, do, and achieve. If you’re rebuilding your site, this will form the basis of your brief to your developers.

  • After a short break, we consider your tagline and your elevator pitch. You’ll use these two persuasive tools across all your marketing, from your website to conversations with prospects, so they’ve got to be concise, relevant and compelling to your niche market.

  • You’ll write your tagline, and your elevator pitch.

  • We’ll do a beginner’s intro to SEO

  • You’ll research some keywords, before we gather for questions, and you pour yourselves a well-earned drink.

Day 2

Write your homepage, supercharge one of the most important pages on your site, conquer your services section, get blogging, and master case studies.

9:00am – 12:30pm NZST

  • We’ll start the day by considering the building blocks of a successful homepage, and how you can make a single page site that answers the important questions.

  • You’ll write the first draft of your homepage

  • We’ll look at why your about page is so important, and how you can make it a high-converting page for leads. There may be hundreds of people out there doing what you do. But there’s only one you. You, your skills and the unique combo of life experiences you use to serve your clients, are your USP. You’re going to put that story front and centre.

  • After a quick cuppa, you’ll brainstorm learning stories in preparation for the first draft of your about page.

  • I’ll share some winning formulas for your about page.

  • You’ll draft the first cut of your about page, before breaking for lunch.

1:30pm – 5:30pm NZST

  • In the afternoon, we’ll jump into the services section of your site, look at what makes a great services landing page and what works for individual service pages.

  • You’re going to draft the first cut of the services section of your site.

  • Then we look at the role blogging and lead magnets play in nurturing your prospects, before taking a short break.

  • You come up with a content strategy for your blog.

  • We look at the formula for a magnetic piece of content

  • You draft an outline for your first piece of content.

  • We finish the day by looking at case studies. Why they matter, and how you write a great one. Before we slap ourselves hugely on the back for a massive weekend of website work well done.

There will be bonuses, ‘cause it’s the law

I’ll also throw in the following handy swag:

  • Website copy templates for your Homepage, About page, Services landing page, and individual Services pages. These are the templates I use myself for my website and for my clients.

  • A draft brief for a website developer, that you can edit to fit your needs. I’ve written one or two website briefs in my time, so this’ll be good.

  • A free 40-minute one-on-one consultancy call, where I’ll review the work you’ve done and give you advice to get you cranking with your website.

  • And you get invited to the Website in a Weekend Facebook group, where you can share questions, learnings and your work in progress with the other consultants and freelancers in the group.

Lizzie took big scary concepts and whittled them down to small, achievable tasks that made us feel empowered and excited about the path ahead. Coaching from Lizzie felt like collaborating with a colleague … albeit one who was brainier, more experienced and a heck of a lot more patient than most!

Thank you Lizzie for generous sharing of your secrets. It’s been motivating and inspiring. The overwhelm of “I need to do all the things” has turned into “I have a list of steps to complete”. It will change the way you look at the process of building the online presence for your business and it will really clarify how all the pieces fit and what you need to consider doing for promoting your expertise and your business.
